We talk to Expat Mum & hairstylist at Colour Iconic – Marrisa Kannheiser

What made you want to move to Dubai and how long have you lived here?
3.5 years ago my husband decided to leave his job of 20+ years in Corporate America to jump out of airplanes full time. It was a big risk changing professions at his age but knowing how passionate he was about skydiving, I was fully supportive and ready to start living life to the fullest! 9 months after his move, I packed up 4 suitcases and our oldest son, hopped on the plane and 14 hours later we were all together again.

What’s your business/job role now?
First off, I’m a mom of 2 boys, ages 7 and 13 months.
Professionally, you can find me working as a Colorist and Stylist at Color Iconic Salon in Al Barsha. If you’re looking for the American ocean washed, surfy blonde or that textured beachy style, I’m your girl!
And if being a mom, wife, and holding a job wasn’t enough, we just started homeschooling this January, so I’m a part time teacher as well. But, I really enjoy being in control of my children’s learning. I’m not a very mainstream person, so doing things a little more unconventionally is a lot more exciting. I want my kids to grow up looking at the world as an open book and not be afraid to write their own story.

Tell us about your hair dressing  background?
I started hairdressing in 2011 in rural Illinois. I knew being a small town hairstylist wasn’t for me and if I wanted to make it in the Industry I needed to be in an Urban area. I found a job in Chicago and would drive 72 miles one-way, just to be an apprentice and hone my cutting skills as a Stylist. Working in Chicago gave me the confidence to work with all hair types! If I hadn’t had such a great mentor, I would probably still be intimidated to get my hands into naturally curly hair textures, which I now specialize in. On top of the cutting, I enjoy a good color challenge. I love adding simplicity to a color while maintaining a lux and expensive looking finish.

What’s your greatest achievement?
Definitely my kids. They have taught me a lot, especially having my first son at 20 years old. I  have always considered myself an old soul, but my first boy really helped mature and mold me into the women I am now. I was instantly forced to put myself second once he was born, but he also gave me to drive to advance my career at such a young age. Now I’m extremely confident in my craft and I have a beautiful family to join me on this wild ride.

Women empowerment – what are your thoughts on it?
It’s so important! Here are some reminders and easy ways to empower yourself, even the women around you.
•Boost your self esteem
•Shut down negativity
•Be open and honest
•Lead by example
•Become a mentor
•Support women-run businesses
•Donate
•KNOW YOUR WORTH!

Favourite clothing stores?
If I had to pick 1 store for the rest of my life, it would be free people. But I love little online boutiques that have simple wardrobe staples.  Basics with neutral tones are my go to and always having a crisp white T-shirt is a must.

Who inspires you?
I don’t have really have 1 person that inspires me specifically. I love the everyday women who are bold, self-sufficient, and resilient.
If that women is a single mom or even an independent business owner I appreciate them ever more! Those are the women we need to be inspired by.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Follow your heart-don’t let other people’s opinions sway your future. You can do ANYTHING.
