Jade rolling: the lowdown
The jade roller slid on to the beauty scene a number of years ago and, though the initial hype has died down, it’s still an integral part of beauty routines for many. But what is it that makes the jade roller so good and should we all be rushing out to get one?
What is a jade roller?
In leymans terms, it’s a beauty tool made of jade, or other stones (you’ll often see rose quartz ones too but jade seems to be the stone of choice for many). And though it might seem like a 21st century fad, they actually date back to 7th century China so there might be something in it!
What does it do?
In a nutshell, it wakes up tired skin and reduces puffiness by boosting circulation and encouraging lymphatic drainage, improving all over complexion, leaving it glowing for hours. It can also aid in relaxation, helping to calm the mind and alleviate minor ailments such as tension headaches, eye strain and sinus congestion.
How is it used?
There are multiple ways in which you can use your jade roller. While you are effectively using it as a gentle facial massager, it can also be utilised to spread product out over your skin. Rolling for around 20 seconds helps the formula absorb in to the skin and even if you’re not convinced about the other benefits, you can’t deny it’s an excellent tool for massaging your face.
To use your jade roller for depuffing, keep in mind your end goal is to push the trapped fluid in your skin cells towards your lymph nodes. The direction of flow should always be “up and out”
Start at the centre of your chin, rolling out and up towards your ear. Then, move the roller up to the side of your mouth and repeat. After that, roll it under your eye, moving it towards your temple and repeat it on your eyelid. For your forehead, roll it up from your brow to your hairline then roll it out towards your temple. And repeat on the other side of your face.
To apply product
Whichever product you are using, dot it around your face as you normally would and and then use the jade roller to spread the product all over. It can also be advantageous to use when wearing a sheet mask to ensure you are absorbing all the benefits of the mask.
Getting the most out of it
A lot of people swear by storing theirs in the freezer so that whenever you use it it is extra cold and increases depuffing further. It is also said that you should “recharge” your jade roller in direct sunlight for a few hours. Whether that’s fact or not, it can’t do any harm can it?
Our take on it
When Miss Dubai started to research this article, that Jade Roller that has been sparsely used over the years started to look more and more appealing. And so, over the past few weeks, we’ve added the jade roller as a twice daily fixture in to our skin routine (morning and night) and we love the results. Storing it in the freezer means you get a welcome refresh on your skin, especially during these hot summer months and the resultant glow is exactly what we hoped for.
